Return to Golf Protocol update

Updated Return to Golf Protocol for Republic of Ireland

To: Club Communication Officers, Club Managers and Honorary Secretaries,

We have been delighted to see our sport make a return over the past number of weeks. With the removal of household and domestic travel restrictions, we hope that the majority of club members will now have returned to play at your clubs.

We would like to draw your attention to updated versions of the Return to Golf Protocol and FAQ's, particularly in relation to the use of buggies.

The protocol will be reviewed dependent on the public health situation in line with the Irish Government “Recovery and Resilience: The Path Ahead plan”.

Golf Ireland’s priority continues to be the safe resumption of all golfing activities at the earliest possible opportunity. Hereunder is an indicative list of activities permitted from particular dates as agreed with Sport Ireland:

From May 10th onwards

• Casual-play rounds for handicap purposes for members and visitors with no restrictions on number of households per group

• Club competitions for members

*The above activities must be organised on the basis of arrive-play-depart. Club competitions for members do not include qualifiers for Golf Ireland competitions such as the Men’s Club Challenge, Women’s Australian Spoons, Women’s Silver and Bronze Medals and R&A Nine-Hole Challenge.

From June 7th onwards (subject to public health outlook at the time)

• So-called ‘Major’ competitions and events (e.g. Captain’s Prize, President’s Prize, etc.)

• Internal Club Match Play Tournaments (e.g. Club Championships)

• Club Open Competitions & Scratch Cups

• Inter-Club Matches (Please note Golf Ireland will be reissuing Inter-Club draws tomorrow with finalised round dates) Championships

Once again, we commend golf clubs and your members for the track record of compliance with the Return to Golf Protocol, which significantly contributed to golf being one of the first sports to resume and for this further easing of restrictions to be possible.

We urge all club officials and members to familiarise themselves with the updated Protocol so that we can all play our part keeping our members and communities safe.

World Handicapping System - General Play Rounds counting for handicapping purposes

As the World Handicap System permits scores recorded in general play rounds to count for handicapping purposes, please note the following requirements for such scores:

• The course must be In “Acceptable Score” condition. PLAY MUST BE FROM THE MARKERS, IF THE TEES HAVE BEEN MOVED FROM COMPETITION PLACING

• Players must register their intention to return a general play score for handicapping purposes before they start their round. THIS MUST BE DONE VIA THE GOLFIRELAND APP

• The above guidance on using physical scorecards and electronic devices applies for general play rounds. The Golf Ireland app allows players to register the intent to return a score, electronically certify scores by a player and marker, and facilitates verification / amendment of the player’s Handicap Index, and therefore can be prescribed as the method for returning General Play scores by any club, should the Club so determine.

• Where an App/electronic device is being used to return a general play score for handicapping purposes as an alternative to a physical score card, the player and the marker should verbally agree on the scores immediately after completing the round.

Returning to Golf - A message from Captains Vivian and Angela

We have all been looking forward to our reopening for what seems like an eternity but tomorrow is the day. We are delighted to be in a position to open and to welcome you all back. There are a few things we would like to remind you about before you start. Please book your tee time in advance using the online booking system. If you subsequently can't play, please cancel your booking. This is important as we are obliged to maintain an accurate record of all on course activity. Course rangers will be on duty all day and will do their best to ensure your safety as well as helping to keep play moving. Much work has been done around the clubhouse, the carpark and the golf course and we are very happy with work to date. However, not everything is complete and some areas still need to settle down. For that reason, and to ensure compliance with covid 19 regulations, we ask the following of you. You should arrive just before your tee time and be ready to tee off at the time you have booked. When you finish, you should leave without delay. This is all in the interest of safety. Hand sanitisers are provided. There are some areas quite heavily sanded, especially on the 3rd fairway, and we ask that you tee up in those areas. Normal grass growth will solve this problem in a short few weeks but for now, we need to protect the course. Please note the 6th tee has been brought forward to allow the area around the tee box to recover following drainage works. It is very important that you use the mat provided. As always, please replace all divots and repair all pitch marks. If you see someone else's divot or unrepaired pitch mark, please treat it as your own and do what is necessary. When you finish your game, please use the temporary cleaning area before you reach the carpark to remove debris from your shoes and trolley. We ask that you put a small hand brush into your bag for this reason.

We expect you are all looking forward to getting back out there as much as we are. We just need to do so in a safe manner and we thank you in advance for your co-operation. As the situation allows, we will move on to allowing more people out together, 18 hole golf and competitions. Hopefully, that will be sooner rather than later but at all times, we will follow Golf Ireland guidelines as you would expect us to do.

Captains Vivian and Angela

Virginia Golf Club - Course update

As we all wait for the opportunity to return to the Golf Course the Club has been very active working on some projects to enhance the Golf Course and to address some issues.

  1. The car park has been extended and resurfaced in fresh stone. This will make the area much cleaner and increases the capacity.

  2. The wooden fencing around the clubhouse and car park is being replaced.

  3. Significant drainage works have been carried out, on the 2nd fairway and the 6th (the lowest point of the Golf Course) where the improvements can already be seen.

  4. Significant sanding has been done, primarily on the 2nd and 3rd holes. The lack of play has meant we can be more aggressive with the sanding this year with the long term benefit being better drainage and improved condition of the playing surface.

Return to Golf Ireland 26th April - Message from Golf Ireland

Golf to resume in the Republic of Ireland from April 26th

NOTE: This applies only to golf in the Republic of Ireland,

To: Club Communication Officers,

Following this evening’s announcement from the Irish Government, it has been confirmed that golf will be one of the first sports to resume for mass participation in the Republic of Ireland.

We welcome the fact that golf, along with tennis, will be the first sports which will open from April 26th. While this is some weeks away, we look forward to members having the opportunity to exercise and play golf in a safe manner.

Following intensive engagement with the Department of Sport and Sport Ireland, Golf Ireland has drafted a Return to Golf Protocol to assist clubs in their preparation for the resumption of play. Now that the resumption of golf has been confirmed, this will be finalised in consultation with the relevant authorities, and issued to clubs as soon as possible.

Golf Ireland has also raised the potential impact of continuing travel restrictions on golf clubs, particularly on those located close to county boundaries and we welcome the confirmation this evening that the extension of travel restrictions next month to county-wide or 20kms. This will facilitate the vast majority of golfers to play at their clubs from April 26th.

Golf Ireland’s priority continues to be the safe resumption of all golfing activities at the earliest possible opportunity. We look forward to continuing to engage with the relevant departments and agencies in the coming days and weeks to progress, as quickly as the public health situation will allow, the full return of all activities associated with our sport, as well as a comprehensive calendar of inter-club events and championships over the coming months.

We commend golf clubs and members for their track record of compliance with the Return to Golf Protocol, which has significantly contributed to golf being one of the first sports to resume. We urge all club officials and members to familiarise themselves with the Protocol when released so that we can all play our part keeping our members and communities safe.

Why You Should Support Your Golf Club - Golf Monthly Magazine

(A piece from Golf Monthly magazine that’s relevant for every Golf Club these days.)

https://www.golfmonthly.com/features/the-game/why-you-should-support-your-golf-club-225286?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=socialflow

In these challenging times, it’s more important than ever for the future of our sport that members support their golf club – here’s why.

The golf club is the beating heart of our sport.

For most golfers in this country, a particular golf club will have been instrumental in fostering our burgeoning interest in the game whether as a junior or in later life.

And for most of us, it’s our golf club where we enjoy the vast bulk of the benefits this great sport offers.

For the sport to thrive, golf clubs are vital in attracting, inspiring and then nurturing individuals to experience a long and fruitful golfing life.

The golf club is a hub of the community in which it sits, a sporting and social centre.

The club delivers a chance to make friends, to catch up with old friends, to introduce new friends.

It’s somewhere you’re always welcome as a member, it’s somewhere golf is available on tap, it’s somewhere you can scratch your competitive itch if you so desire.

Each members’ golf club is unique, shaped by generations of local golfers to have its own inimitable character, its own ambience when you walk into the clubhouse, even its own way of presenting the golf course.

It’s these idiosyncrasies, created by location and personalities that give golf such depth and variety.

It’s easy to take the golf club for granted but it doesn’t exist as a provided facility, it’s there because of the fee-paying members.

They provide the facility to the community and that’s something all golf club members should be proud of, and perhaps even shout about a little more.

After a year of various Covid restrictions, many long-term members and those who had stepped away from club membership have been reminded of the benefits a golf club can provide – physical, competitive and social.

The golf club is shaped and driven by its members and, as such, the support of those members is crucial if the club is to deliver the best possible product.

Yes, to a large extent that support is financial through subscriptions, and many clubs saw a boost in membership numbers after the last lockdown… But there are other ways for members to give their support.

Some will find time to sit on the committee, to shape the future of the club, to make sure it’s keeping pace with the requirements of a modern membership.

Every club will, certainly should, offer opportunities for members to volunteer; to help with the junior section, to fill divots, tend the clubhouse garden, run a social event or two.

What all golf club members can do is to promote the benefits of being a club member to friends and family members – to do their bit to make sure club membership numbers stay healthy, bringing people (young and old) into the fold.

At the very top level, the journey of most of our golfing champions has begun at one of our diverse and historic clubs.

The support of club members has been crucial to the success of many of the game’s greatest exponents.

By supporting a golf club, you’re essentially supporting golf.

Your fees go towards maintaining a valuable facility with a contribution to your home union so they can re-invest in the future of the game.

Any efforts you make to assist in the day-to-day running of the club, be it as a volunteer, a committee member or even a team member help to keep the club and the game healthy.

Your very participation in golf club life perpetuates the positive qualities of the sport – It’s a highly sociable, enjoyable and challenging pastime that can be enjoyed by all.

To all golf club members – keep up the good work!

Online Tee-time Booking update

Virginia Golf Club has decided to switch provider of our online booking system (and score entry) to an Irish company CLUBNET. This will necessitate the installation of a new App on your phone. This process has already started and it is hoped to have it fully operational when Golf resumes.

Please bear with us during this switchover phase and all help will be provided to anyone requiring assistance with the move.

In the meantime, go to the App Store or Play Store and download the excellent CLUBNET APP where you can view the other clubs already on the platform. We look forward to partnering with CLUBNET and forging forward.

Captains' Newsletter March 2021

March 2021 Newsletter

Fellow Golfers

Due to Covid 19 restrictions, we again have faced a slow start to the 2021 golf season.

While the course has remained closed since January, the course work has continued with great vigour, with our course staff and committee taking every chance to maintain and improve playing conditions. We are glad to report that the work which started on the trees in November was completed by the tree surgeon in February. All agree we’ve had an excellent outcome leaving the course much safer for all players.

Hollow coring and sanding of the greens and fairways has been carried out during lockdown, and essential drainage work has also been done.

All this work has resulted in great improvements and our golf course is looking so inviting and in pristine condition, we wait in anticipation for a return to golf in April.

We have recently received terrific news as our grant application for €25,000 has been approved by Golf Ireland. This means we can now do the kind of work we’ve wanted to do for a long time but have not been in a position to carry out. We still need to agree the precise details with Golf Ireland as the money can only be spent on certain items as agreed with them. We hope to include further drainage work, repairs and improvements to the clubhouse and car park, new fencing and signage, purchase of an online booking system as well as other defined projects to be agreed. We will let you know more when the detail has been confirmed.

Many members have already paid their annual subscription and we are grateful for that. If you haven’t yet gotten around to that yet, we would be grateful if you could do so in the near future. Day to day expenses such as wages, insurance, rent and machine maintenance must be paid from our own resources and membership fees are our main source of income. Furthermore, we are likely to be impacted by a fall in sponsorship and other income due to the pandemic.

Our committee members have held regular meetings to plan and prepare for a safe return to play and again we will need volunteer course rangers. We will post details of this nearer the time and

we take this opportunity to thank all the rangers who assisted last year. Their help and input resulted in the smooth running of a difficult situation.

We have a lot of plans and improvements scheduled for the coming year, and we will keep you updated via newsletter/website. For now, our focus is on getting ready to welcome you all back in a safe way.

Kind Regards

Captains Vivian and Angela.

Virginia Golf Club Course Update February 2021

As we all eagerly await the resumption of Golf in Virginia the Club has taken the opportunity to proceed with some essential maintenance on the trees on the Golf Course.

An Arboricultural Consultant was contracted, a while back, to survey the trees on the Golf Course. He compiled a comprehensive report on the condition of the trees and identified remedial work to be done on over 30 of them.

This work has been completed over the past 6 weeks leaving us with a much safer environment in which to play golf.

Why join a golf club in 2021?

Why join a Golf Club? A very good piece from Kevin Markham, the renowned Golf writer and photojournalist, in IrishGolfer.ie extolling the virtues of Golf Club membership.

https://irishgolfer.ie/latest-golf-news/2021/01/11/why-join-a-golf-club-in-2021/

Here, in Virginia, we may lack the facilities of some clubhouses but we have some excellent sponsors in our locality where we can spend some off-course time together.

The surge in golf club membership that started in April and May of this year took most observers in the golf industry by surprise. In hindsight, given the Covid-19 restrictions on other sporting activities, it actually makes a lot of sense. Some 12,000 new members signed up and with the uncertainties of what will happen in 2021 (and beyond), membership of a golf club will be an invaluable and treasured asset. Here’s why:

Covid-19 – Ok, so we saw courses close during the October/November Phase 5 lockdown and here we are again which is a shame as golf is one of the safest sports in this pandemic. Along with things like participants’ age profiles (certainly for the older generations) it is also a vital activity for mental and physical well-being. Without wanting to be the harbinger of doom and gloom, there is a possibility that being a member of a club may be the only way, on occasion, to play a round of golf this year. Above all else, this demonstrates how valuable club membership really is.

Golf on Tap – When you become a member of a club you can play golf at your course just about whenever you want and especially at weekends. Late summer evenings are perfect for slipping out to play a quick few holes and there are those who will happily squeeze in a few at sunrise, too. And with the club’s practice facilities you can fine-tune your game ahead of the weekend medal. All of this and not a green fee in sight. There’s also the Pro, the shop, the bar and restaurant. A Pro can offer not only advice and lessons but he/she can provide you with the opportunity to test new equipment on your own course.

A Sense of Community – Even in Covid times, with the various protocols in place at your club, once you pass through the gates the only thing that matters is that you all want to enjoy the golf course and the facilities on offer. It creates a positive vibe and a friendly atmosphere. New members – and we know there are a lot of those – are typically taken under the wing of a long-serving member, which eases introductions and helps new members settle in quickly. Family golf is also growing and the attitude of ‘juniors-should-be-seen-and-not-heard’ is mostly a thing of the past. This unites everybody under the one banner that is YOUR golf club.

Make Friends – If you’re happy to spend four to five hours in the company of just a couple of other members then chances are that you’ll be making friends for life… or at least until they beat you in the final of the President’s Cup.

Team Participation – Clubs have numerous teams they put forward every year – for low and high handicappers alike. Some are for singles and some are for pairs. Many of the most popular are mixed competitions. They can be for a group of local clubs or they can be national events which will see you travelling around the country to play different courses… for free. You don’t have to participate but plenty of golfers love the inter-club rivalry and competitive environment. It might just bring out the best in you.

Challenge Yourself – When you pay a green fee at a golf course you will have only one or two tees to choose from. But, at your home club, playing with friends or by yourself you are not restricted. Why not play the par threes from the back tees and the par fives from the red tees one day… and then switch the next. You’ll play two very different courses which will help improve your game and knowledge of the course.

Club Competitions – A golf club’s weekend and mid-week competitions vary considerably in format and interest – from scrambles and fourballs to individual strokeplay, stableford, V Par and even 3-club competitions. They all add a certain frisson to your weekly game and there’s no better way to improve your handicap than on the field of play. Then there are the prizes you can win. Some of these competitions are semi-opens (especially midweek) which means you can also invite guests to enjoy your course.

The Club’s Future – When you belong to a club you become more interested in its future success. Even if you don’t want to be on committees and councils, simply by being a member you are entitled to your say – whether it’s to point out that sand has become compacted in a particular bunker or to suggest a better location for hand sanitisers.

Junior Programmes – If you have kids of your own, what better environment to introduce them to the game than your home club? Even during the second lockdown clubs were able to continue coaching juniors. Everything they need, from the Pro to the practice facilities to the restaurant, is in one place. It may be a cliché to say kids are the future of the game but it’s also true. With the average age profile at most Irish golf clubs well into the 60s, enticing youngsters into the game is highly desirable. Young boys and girls might stop playing after a few years to pursue other sports/interests, but it is more than worth the investment to introduce them to golf as young as possible. Consider that golf and swimming are two sports you can participate in from the age of 4 to 94 and those kids – your kids – could easily come back to the game at some stage and play right alongside you. Many golf clubs also offer special family membership packages so take a look at how your kids could empower the future of your club.

The Clubhouse – Things may be more complicated these days with Covid-19 but as a member you get discounts on food and drink in the restaurant/bar. The TV will be switched to golf whenever it’s on so you can relax over a meal or a drink and watch the day’s events unfold. There just might be a snooker table hiding somewhere in the depths, too.

During the summer evenings your club will probably have barbecues, nine-and-dine competitions, poker nights, pub quizzes, fashion shows, wine tastings… to the point that there’s something for everyone. And not just in summer either. Co. Sligo Golf Club has a very active bridge club and its own choir so you’ll find members with similar interests to your own and an environment where you can pursue them.

GUI Benefits – GUI affiliated clubs give you a card which has its own range of benefits (assuming you’re fully paid up). Insurance is just one but you will also benefit from special GUI discounted green fees at most Irish clubs. Sometimes it will be 15%, but in other cases it can be 50%. That could save you €50 on the spot. You also receive an official GUI Handicap, which entitles you to play in Open competitions around the country. On a wider stage, many courses around the world insist you have a handicap certificate if you wish to play there.

The Extras – Different clubs offer different benefits. One particularly attractive extra is reciprocal playing rights at other courses. For example, if you join Galway Bay, you receive automatic playing privileges at Palmerstown House and Concra Wood. Carton House offers reciprocal playing rights with Fota Island, Ballyliffin and Dromoland Castle. These are not the only ones by any stretch. At Galway Bay, the club is already up and running with its 2021 renewals and the first 50 who renewed received a free fourball for Carne or Connemara. At Douglas Golf Club in Cork, a complimentary taxi service on weekend evenings will ship members home if they’ve been enjoying a drink… thus tackling one of the big issues that affects a lot of golf clubs today and keeps members in the clubhouse longer than they would otherwise stay.

Last Resort – Resort courses often offer discounted room rates and spa/leisure membership rates if you join their golf club. If you’re very lucky they may give you a few hundred euro’s worth of credit to spend in the resort as well. Mount Juliet, Castlemartyr, Dromoland Castle and Carton House all spring to mind.

Coronavirus Update re Golf Clubs

Statement on golf in the Republic of Ireland

GOLF IRELAND HQ, COVID-1924 Dec 2020

Update - 24th December 2020:

Update to guidance for Golf Clubs in the Republic of Ireland during Level 5

Sport Ireland have today (24th December) issued a further update to the current Level 5 measures, which will remain in place until 12th January 2021. This will require golf clubs to urgently note the following additional points:

Participants in sport and exercise in unsupervised/uncoached activity must be from no more than two households.

Therefore, groups playing on golf courses during these Level 5 measures must be confined to a maximum of two households.

This means that all tee times must be either two-balls, or alternatively three-balls and four-balls where players in the group are from no more than two households. A household for these purposes includes a household support bubble, guidance for which is available here: https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/3516d-support-bubbles/.

We have made Sport Ireland aware of the issues regarding the implementation of this change in the short-term as timesheets for golf club activities are likely in operation for at least the next several days. However, we are urging golf clubs to update their timesheet booking systems to take account of this changed guidance as soon as possible.

These additional requirements from Sport Ireland come against a backdrop of escalating public health challenges with the incidence of COVID-19 rising exponentially in Ireland. Golf Ireland therefore strongly encourages golf clubs to implement this change, and in doing so continue to exhibit the high level of compliance that has made it possible for our sport to continue to remain open and accessible during the current Level 5 measures.

The above update must be read in conjunction with our previous statement issued on 22 December below.

Statement from 22nd December 2020

Following continued discussions with government authorities and Sport Ireland, Golf Ireland welcomes the fact that golf courses and facilities will be permitted to remain open as the Republic of Ireland moves again to Level 5 on a phased basis from 24 December.

The guidance issued by Golf Ireland on 27 November 2020 continues to apply to all golf clubs (see here: https://www.golfireland.ie/news-detail?newsarticleid=69&tags=Golf%20Ireland%20HQ ), with the following important updates:

At 3pm on 24 December, Restaurants and pubs operating as restaurants will close. After this point, clubhouse access should once again be confined to use of toilet facilities (provided they can be kept clean) and initial retrieval of golf equipment from lockers. If toilet facilities are open, clubs should adopt a one-in, one-out approach. Outdoor dining is not permitted, and golfers should depart the facility following the conclusion of their game as soon as possible.

From 26th December, inter-county travel restrictions will be reintroduced and will, as always, apply to sporting activity.

While all retail, including pro shops, are permitted to remain open, the Government is asking all retailers to defer any plans for January sales events (see www.gov.ie for more).

Further guidance will be issued to clubs in line as and when government change the current Level 5 status.
